Remote working benefits and how this impacts IT requirements
In the current climate with the impact Covid-19 is having on office-based businesses, there is a greater need for remote working. However, this model of remote working does offer several benefits, which may lead it to becoming a normal way of life even after offices can be fully reopened.
How remote working benefits employers
There are many benefits to remote working for employers, including:
Increased productivity
For many employers there are concerns that working from home limits productivity, but several recent studies since working from home was enforced due to Covid-19 have shown that the opposite is actually true.
Having a quiet space to work in without distractions and being able to focus solely on the tasks at hand can actually improve productivity by around 13%, which is great news for employers.
Saving on equipment and connectivity
While some companies may need to provide IT equipment, when staff are working from home they will be using their own broadband connection and telephone lines meaning that there are likely to be some cost savings to be made for employers.
More choice when hiring staff
With the obstacle of needing to live within commuting distance of the office being removed when hiring new staff, working remotely opens up a much wider pool of people – and therefore skills and talents – to choose from.
Less commuting time meaning staff are less likely to call in sick
Studies have shown that people will call in sick to avoid the daily commute when they’re not feeling well, so removing this may reduce absenteeism among staff. Those working from home might also start their day early or finish later due to not needing commuting time too.
Retaining employees
By introducing permanent home working, many companies find that they have a better employee retention rate. This is due to the fact that people can keep their jobs even if they move to a new area, plus the flexibility that working from home offers is often a huge draw for employees meaning that they are less likely to want to leave.

While remote working undoubtedly benefits both employers and employees, there are some IT support requirements that need to be considered.
